The writing of this most unusual book was based on
the premise that virtually all people possess an innate desire to
"collect."
Many people have collections
already, but many have never found a subject that interests them.
Collecting Americana serves both
these groups, for in addition to the traditional, closely defined categories of
collecting, it suggests subjects that may interface several fields but that
also constitute categories of their own. Almost all of the collectors'
objectives are covered: firearms, autographs, glassware, coins, stamps, books,
and so forth.
But much space is also
devoted to the off-trail hobbies that many find fascinating.
The collecting of Americana is, in an important
sense, a study of United States history.
Collecting Americana is practical as well as interesting.
One may read it for profit as well as
pleasure, and, in the last analysis, Collecting Americana is itself a
valuable collection.
